SOPHIA’s third virtual Practitioner Workshop, The How-To of Health in All Policies: Research and Real World Applications, was held virtually December 5th & 6th, 2023, 11:30 am - 1:30 pm ET each day.
Day One began with an examination of the future of HiAP with SOPHIA leadership, followed by breakout room discussions. Next, there was a presentation of a Research Agenda for HIA during which a group of international researchers shared their research work and outcomes. Following this, there was Q&A. Day Two featured tools for practitioners: legislative health notes from JHU and the debut of SOPHIA's HiAP Implementation Guide. Participants had a chance to discuss the tools in small groups and shared their own work experiences.
Stefanie Carignan is Associate Director of the Health in All Policies Research Center at the Johns Hopkins University Bloomberg School of Public Health, which uses health in all policies tools to inform policymaking. She previously worked at The Pew Charitable Trusts’ Health Impact Project. Carignan holds a master’s degree in Human Rights and Humanitarian Affairs from the Institut d’Études Politiques de Paris (Sciences Po) and a bachelor’s in Political Studies from Bard College.
Dr. Margaret Douglas is a Consultant in Public Health, Public Health Scotland and Honorary Clinical Senior Lecturer, University of Glasgow. Her interests include Health in All Policies, Health Impact Assessment and links between Place and Health and Economy and health. She has worked on HIA since the late 1990s, producing HIA reports, guidance and sector-specific evidence guides for HIA as well as academic publications. She chaired the Scottish Health and Inequalities Impact Assessment Network from its inception in 2001 until 2023. She works closely with Scottish Government and colleagues across Scotland to champion and use HIA in practice.
Dr. Katie Hirono is a public health practitioner specialised in health impact assessment (HIA), health equity, public participation and public health policy. She has over 10 years’ experience working in the US, Australia and the UK and has contributed to over 50 HIAs throughout her career. Katie works with the private and public sectors to integrate health into decision-making, including for Environmental Impact Assessments (EIA) for major infrastructure schemes. Katie also advises professional bodies on good practice and has led capacity building on HIA for Public Health Authorities. Katie holds a PhD from the University of Edinburgh in Global Health Policy. She is Past President of SOPHIA and Adjunct Fellow at the University of New South Wales.

Keshia Pollack Porter, Johns Hopkins University
Dr. Keshia Pollack Porter is a Bloomberg Centennial Professor and the Bloomberg Centennial Chair of the Department of Health Policy and Management at the Johns Hopkins Bloomberg School of Public Health. Dr. Pollack Porter is a health equity scholar whose research advances policies that create safe and healthy environments where people live, work, play, and travel, with an emphasis on addressing structural drivers of health and promoting effective multi-sector collaborations. Dr. Pollack Porter is an internationally recognized leader in promoting health in all policies, and the development of methodologies that promote health and equity considerations in policy decisions across multiple sectors to advance a Culture of Health. Dr. Pollack Porter is co-author of the recently published book, Policy Engagement (APHA Press 2023), and a member of the National Academy of Medicine.
